Shakuhachi Flute

During the 50th anniversary of the bombing of Hiroshima, a commemoration was held at the Cathedral Guadalupe on Ross Avenue. It was a very touching service, made even more so by the story of the crane. As I sat in the cathedral, I heard this haunting sound coming from where I could not tell. It seemed to be permeating the whole cathedral with no substance, almost like the air itself. Then, its source was revealed as  Stan Richardson
slowly made his way down the aisle playing a shakuhachi flute. It was the most surreal sound and it gave the whole service a very meditative feel.  Afterwards I approached Bob Dennis with the Dallas Peace Center who had put on this beautiful event and asked him if I could ever be of help. He told me later that the whole event had been video taped but the sound of the shakuhachi wasn't captured very accurately so could I record the pieces at my studio. This was when I got to meet Stan, a native of Coventry in England and living in Dallas. We have become good friends.

From Puerto Vallarta
Mexico

I spent a week around Christmas during the incredible Festival of the Virgin de Guadalupe in Puerto Vallarta. The streets are just lined with thousands upon thousands of men, women and children patiently moving forward at a snail's pace to pay their respects and offer a gift to the Virgin. I had read about Flor Estrada, a little girl who had lost both legs when a truck reversed over her and had decided to make a tape of "The Sounds of Puerto Vallarta" to be sold to help pay for some of the tremendous expenses her family had to pay. I recorded in restaurants, on hotel rooftops, at the beach, outside cafes and inside this beautiful church where all different kinds of bands march in playing the same infectious tune. Some in a jazz style, others like this one, mariachi. At one point there is this amazing cacophony as one band is totally inside the church and another is coming in. What a sound!!! And if only you could see the pride on the faces of these fine men as they sang this song.
